As diesel inventories dwindle, rations may be ahead for East Coast drivers

Diesel prices continue to climb across the nation, hitting a new high of $5.5557 a gallon on Thursday, according to the American Automobile Association. These rising prices point to a worsening shortage that could eventually lead to rations on the East Coast as soon as this summer.

“I wouldn’t be surprised to see diesel being rationed on the East Coast this summer,” said John Catsimatidis, CEO of United Refining Co. “Right now, inventories are low, and we may see a shortage in coming months.”

Data from the Department of Energy shows that national diesel inventories are the lowest they’ve been in 17 years, and stockpiles on the East Coast haven’t been this low since 1990.

Drivers have taken to social media to share the impact of these rising fuel costs.
