2023 Report Reveals Top 10 Truck Bottlenecks

The American Transportation Research Institute has just unveiled its 12th annual ranking of the worst traffic hotspots for truckers in America, giving an insight into where gridlock is most prevalent on our nation’s highways. According to their report, these hotspots represent troublesome traffic situations that have serious implications on productivity as well economic growth across the country.

2023 Top 10 Truck Bottlenecks

1. Fort Lee, New Jersey: Intersection of I-95 and SR 4
2. Chicago: I-294 at I-290/I-88
3. Houston: I-45 at I-69/US 59
4. Atlanta: I-285 at I-85 (North)
5. Atlanta: I-20 at I-285 (West)
6. Chicago: I-290 at I-90/I-94
7. Los Angeles: SR 60 at SR 57
8. Los Angeles: I-710 at I-105
9. Nashville: I-24/I-40 at I-440 (East)
10. San Bernardino, California: I-10 at I-15

Every year, the George Washington Bridge proves to be a headache for truckers travelling between New Jersey and New York. This notorious bottleneck continues its reign as America’s most congested road crossing after taking home the top spot on American Transportation Research Institute’s annual listing five years running.

There were only a few changes in the top 10 list from last year, with the 2022 list including:

1. Fort Lee: I-95 and SR 4
2. Cincinnati: I-71 at I-75
3. Houston: I-45 at I-69/US 59
4. Atlanta: I-285 at I-85 (North)
5. Atlanta: I-20 at I-285 (West)
6. Chicago: I-290 at I-90/I-94
7. Los Angeles: SR 60 at SR 57
8. Dallas: I-45 at I-30
9. San Bernardino, California: I-10 at I-15
10. Chattanooga, Tennessee: I-75 at I-24

The latest analysis from ATRI serves as a stark reminder that the post-pandemic return to work has come at a cost. Traffic conditions have worsened significantly in recent years, resulting in major supply chain bottlenecks across the country. With average truck speeds falling 6% compared to last year and less than 30 MPH reported in 10 of America’s busiest locations.

ATRI’s annual analysis is no small feat. Their database of freight truck GPS data and custom software applications allow them to analyze terabytes of information from different trucking operations across the U.S., producing a congestion impact ranking for each location and supporting numerous state & federal initiatives in terms of freight mobility.
