Colorado’s statewide intercity bus service, Bustang, has hit a major milestone by extending its network to 66 routes. ACE Express Coaches, the service operator, announced that the expansion exceeded its targets and was completed earlier than planned.
The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) played a central role in enabling this significant growth by supporting the addition of 16 new routes in September, 10 more in October, and another 16 in November. This expansion was further strengthened by the acquisition of 25 brand-new motorcoaches from CDOT, ensuring the updated routes can effectively meet demand.
Enhanced Services Across Key Regions
The expanded Bustang service now features 11 week-day round trips covering the North, South, and West lines. Weekend travel has been enhanced as well, with six additional round trips added to the North and South lines every Saturday, Sunday, and holiday. The most dramatic improvement, however, is on the West Line, which now operates 22 daily routes along the bustling I-70 corridor—nearly tripling its previous capacity.
ACE Express Coaches’ Vision for Growth
Shawn Davis, General Manager of ACE Express Coaches, highlighted key investments in workforce development and facilities that have propelled the company to meet these ambitious expansion goals. ACE Express Coaches added over 50 new employees and launched a state-of-the-art training facility to handle the larger scale of operations.
“With our recent agreement, we’ve doubled our revenue miles, reflecting years of planning to meet community and commuter needs while reducing emissions and congestion,” Davis stated. “Our focus on safety, operational excellence, and adaptability in challenging conditions ensures reliable service, even in Colorado’s mountainous terrain and extreme weather.”
Davis also made a significant contribution to route optimization strategies, serving on the Expansion Plan Review Committee. His involvement ensured that the new routes accounted for operational complexities like adverse weather conditions.
A Collaborative Effort for Sustainability
Graeme Legh, CEO of All Aboard America Holdings (AAAHI), the parent company of ACE Express Coaches, praised the strong collaboration with CDOT that made this expansion possible.
“This expansion is a testament to proactive planning and investment in sustainability, fleet upgrades, and infrastructure to meet the growing demand for public transit,” said Legh.
Bustang, originally launched in 2015, is gearing up to celebrate its 10th anniversary in 2025. The service has become a vital component of Colorado’s transit infrastructure, catering to daily commuters, local communities, and the state’s thriving tourism sector.
Looking Ahead—Less Traffic, Fewer Emissions
The renewed contract between ACE Express Coaches and CDOT emphasizes shared goals of cutting congestion on Colorado’s roads, lowering harmful emissions, and making public transportation more accessible. By encouraging residents to choose buses over personal vehicles, Bustang aims to reduce traffic jams and create a healthier environment for all Coloradans.
With its expanded routes and upgraded fleet, Bustang continues to pave the way for a more connected, efficient, and sustainable transit future in Colorado.
