Fullington Trailways Delivers 10,000 Pounds of Supplies to Support Hurricane Relief in North Carolina

Fullington Trailways delivered 10,000 pounds of supplies to North Carolina to support hurricane relief efforts. Sparked by drivers and embraced by the community, this initiative highlights the power of collective compassion and the bus industry’s generosity.

An idea sparked by the dedicated drivers at Fullington Trailways evolved into a powerful community mission, offering crucial aid to North Carolina residents affected by the catastrophic aftermath of Hurricane Helene.

Under the leadership of Jonathan Berzas, President and CEO of Fullington Trailways, the company rallied its employees, local businesses, and the State College, Pennsylvania, community to provide assistance to those in need.

The October donation drive culminated in the delivery of over 10,000 pounds of essential supplies to the ABCCM Servant Leadership Center in Arden, North Carolina, on November 5.

Inspiration From Within

It all started when the idea to help came directly from Fullington Trailways’ drivers, who recognized an opportunity to contribute.

“We heard other bus companies in Pennsylvania were sending buses with supplies, and our drivers suggested we do the same,” said Berzas, who has been leading the company for 13 years. “I thought, ‘Let’s try this.’ Our HR, sales, driver, and operations teams came together, and we started by asking employees to contribute.”

Initially intended as an internal effort, the project quickly gained momentum after a casual discussion Berzas had with friends while camping.

“I mentioned the drive while camping, and one of my friends asked if we could open it to the public. That Monday, I asked my team to include the community and our customers,” Berzas shared.

A Community Rises to the Challenge

The community’s response was overwhelming, exceeding all expectations.

Individuals and businesses donated approximately 10,000 pounds of critical supplies, including pallets of water, canned foods, hygiene products, pet supplies, diapers, and paper goods. One business, Caparelli Plumbing, stepped in with an extraordinary donation of four entire pallets of water. Additionally, Fullington employees and local organizations raised over $1,100 for the American Red Cross.

While the collection point wasn’t accepting clothing donations, Fullington driver John Hartman went the extra mile, coordinating with another organization to ensure the clothing found a home, making every donation count.

Fullington’s Commitment to Community

Fullington Trailways, backed by nearly 500 employees and a robust fleet of 75 motorcoaches, over 250 school buses, and support vehicles, is no stranger to community involvement. The company has embarked on numerous charitable ventures over its long history, including holiday “Stuff the Bus” initiatives and disaster relief efforts across the U.S., supporting areas impacted by tragedies in Louisiana, Texas, and Florida.

Despite its scale, the company prides itself on fostering a workplace that feels like family.

“We have a corporate structure, but our culture is like a family,” said Berzas, the first CEO from outside the founding family in the company’s 116-year history. “Our employees are our greatest asset. When they see their company cares for them and their communities, it creates loyalty and pride.”

The Bus Industry’s Generosity

The extraordinary success of this donation drive is a testament not only to the giving spirit of the State College community but also to the collaborative nature of the bus industry at large.

“The bus industry is incredibly generous,” said Berzas. “Many companies step up during disasters. I hope this inspires others to do the same.”

Fullington Trailways’ efforts underscore the power of businesses, employees, and communities coming together with a shared mission of compassion and generosity. Their story serves as an inspiring example of how collective action can make a meaningful difference for those enduring hardship.
