Uber Joins Forces with Toast to Provide Commission-Free Deliveries

Uber and Toast’s new integration provides U.S. restaurants with commission-free deliveries for a low flat fee.

Uber has strengthened its collaboration with Toast, a leading restaurant technology platform, to introduce a new integration between Toast Delivery Services and Uber Direct. This partnership enables U.S. restaurants to access commission-free delivery for a low flat fee per order, helping them cut costs and expand their delivery zones. Leveraging Uber’s extensive delivery network, restaurants can now fulfill orders placed through phone or Toast’s digital channels.

“This expanded integration with Toast will give restaurants greater flexibility while providing commission-free delivery for a low flat fee per order,” stated the companies in their announcement.

Uber Direct is now fully integrated into Toast Delivery Services, empowering restaurants to handle deliveries for orders made through their websites, apps, or phone lines. Brandi Villarreal, the head of online food delivery at Uber Direct, shared her enthusiasm, explaining, “They know from experience that Uber Eats offers a reliable and speedy delivery experience, so why not use Uber Direct to fulfill delivery requests from guests who order directly through their website, app, or other restaurant-owned platforms? At the same time, they can continue to maximize orders and their ability to acquire new customers ordering via Uber Eats.”

This expanded partnership builds on the groundwork established in 2021, arriving at a crucial time for the restaurant industry. “I don’t know about you guys, but I’m ready for ’24 to be behind us, and I think ’25 is going to be a great year,” expressed Kate Jaspon, CFO of Dunkin’s parent company Inspire Brands, at an industry conference in Las Vegas, as reported by CNBC.

The restaurant sector has faced significant challenges this year, with bankruptcies surging by 50% compared to 2023 and traffic falling month-over-month for establishments open at least a year through September, according to insights from Black Box Intelligence. Even major players like McDonald’s and Starbucks have reported disappointing quarterly sales, leaving their investors concerned.

Meanwhile, smaller restaurants are facing their own set of hurdles, particularly when it comes to securing funding. Mitchell Hipp, divisional vice president at Rewards Network, commented in a recent interview, “Between the Small Business Administration and banks, not a lot of them want to talk to you.”

Uber and Toast’s enhanced service aims to alleviate some of these pressures by offering a scalable and efficient delivery model that restaurants of all sizes can depend on. This integration represents a promising step toward helping restaurants bounce back and thrive in an increasingly competitive landscape.
