ABAF Report Highlights Motorcoach Industry Trends in the US and Canada

The recently released 2024 Motorcoach Census, prepared by the American Bus Association Foundation (ABAF) in collaboration with Tourism Economics, sheds light on the recovery and progress made by the motorcoach industry in the United States and Canada throughout 2023. With the themes of “resiliency” and “recovery” at its core, the report explores the industry’s growth trends and emphasizes its critical role in the broader transportation sector and local communities.

The motorcoach industry faced immense challenges in the wake of the 2020 pandemic, with over 40% of operators forced to shut down permanently. However, the latest census data reveals that the sector has rebounded significantly, proving its capacity to adapt and thrive.

By the Numbers

Here are some standout statistics from the 2024 report:

• 1,859 motorcoach operators in the U.S. managed a collective fleet of 46,751 motorcoaches, while 125 companies in Canada oversaw 1,195 motorcoaches.

• Together, these providers transported 38 billion passengers, covering over 1.6 billion miles.

• The industry supported nearly 77,000 jobs.

• Charter services had the highest vehicle utilization rate, accounting for 66% of motorcoach usage.

• Small operators (89.6% of companies) dominate the industry, demonstrating its community-driven nature.

• Larger operators continue to contribute significantly to fleet capacity and overall efficiency.
