New York City has rolled out congestion pricing, and for rideshare and taxi drivers, it means navigating a new fee structure. Here’s what this means for your trips in Manhattan.
Key Details for Drivers
- Taxis, Green Cabs, and Black Cars: Each trip in Manhattan’s Congestion Relief Zone (CRZ) now includes a 75-cent surcharge.
- Rideshare Vehicles: Uber and Lyft are charging a $1.50 fee for every trip that begins, ends, or passes through the CRZ.
- Lyft Credit Program: For January, Lyft offers a $1.50 ride credit for every congestion fee paid, valid for future Lyft or Citi Bike trips.
Understanding Congestion Pricing
Congestion pricing is an electronic tolling system designed to reduce traffic in Manhattan’s busiest areas, encourage public transportation, and fund critical infrastructure improvements. The Congestion Relief Zone spans local streets south of 60th Street, excluding highways like the FDR Drive and West Side Highway.
The toll for most vehicles entering the CRZ is $9.
This initiative aims to ease gridlock while generating approximately $15 billion for transit upgrades. However, for drivers, it introduces additional costs.
How the Fees Break Down
Drivers of taxis, green cabs, and black cars now face a 75-cent surcharge per trip. For rideshare drivers, the fee is $1.50 per trip, applicable whenever a journey intersects Manhattan’s CRZ.
One passenger expressed frustration, telling FOX 5 NY:
“It’s really not fair, we’re traveling all over the city for work, and it’s just added to all the other surcharges that we pay from the gas, this and that. It’s a lot.”
Check Your Receipts
For drivers, it’s essential to be aware that riders will cover these fees, so transparency is key. Make sure your passengers understand the additional charges and keep an eye on your own records to avoid disputes.
FOX 5 NY reported that passengers have been charged incorrectly in some cases. For example, a rider traveling above 60th Street was still hit with a $1.50 congestion fee despite not entering the CRZ.
Lyft’s Reimbursement Program
Lyft is offering some relief for drivers and riders this month. According to their website:
“In 2025, we want riders to relax and focus on a ‘new me,’ not new fees. With New York City’s additional $1.50 rideshare congestion fee set to hit New Yorkers and visitors starting Jan. 5, we’re helping riders ease into the new year.”
Here’s how it works:
- Trips beginning, ending, or passing through the CRZ qualify for the credit.
- After the trip, Lyft sends a notification confirming a $1.50 credit to the passenger’s account.
- Credits can be used for Lyft rides or Citi Bike trips and expire one week after issuance.
