Amid soaring airfare and widespread airport disruptions, millions of travelers across the U.S. and Canada are turning to buses as their preferred mode of transportation. Companies like FlixBus and Greyhound have emerged as go-to options, offering a cost-effective and dependable solution for travelers seeking alternatives to flying.
Recent data from Flix North America shows a notable 7.5% year-over-year increase in holiday ridership across the U.S. and Canada. The numbers are even more striking in Canada, where FlixBus reported a massive 128% year-over-year rise in ridership, highlighting growing demand for cross-border intercity bus travel.
FlixBus Leads the Charge
“The holiday season demonstrated how essential intercity buses are in keeping people connected across North America,” says Kai Boysan, CEO of Flix North America. “With rising airfare, airport disruptions, and high travel costs, more travelers are recognizing FlixBus and Greyhound as a dependable and affordable way to reach their destinations.”
Despite the uptick in ridership numbers, both FlixBus and Greyhound have managed to outperform major U.S. airlines in terms of punctuality. FlixBus achieved an impressive 82% on-time rate, while Greyhound was close behind at 79.8%. These figures underscore the reliability of bus travel, a notable advantage during a holiday season fraught with winter weather delays affecting other transportation modes.
The Path to Growth
A recent report from DePaul University also predicts promising growth for the intercity bus travel industry. With travelers increasingly searching for affordable, sustainable, and accessible transport solutions, buses are poised to play an even larger role in connecting cities and smaller communities.
Flix North America is ready to capitalize on this trend. The company has plans to expand its routes, establish stronger intermodal connections, and enhance accessibility in the U.S. and Canada to meet the rising demand.
“With nearly 40% of Americans lacking access to reliable transportation, we see a tremendous opportunity to expand service and improve connectivity,” says Boysan. “Flix North America is committed to working with local and regional partners to enhance transit options, ensuring bus travel remains a viable and affordable choice for more communities.”
