Massport, Uber, and Lyft Join Forces to Transform Logan Airport’s Rideshare Experience

Massport, Uber, and Lyft have come together to revamp the rideshare experience at Boston Logan Airport, promising significant improvements for passengers and drivers alike. However, the updates come with a slight fee increase.

Enhanced Infrastructure, New Features, and Fee Adjustments

Starting in July, the surcharge for Uber and Lyft rides at Logan Airport will rise from $3.25 to $5.50. While this is an increase, it’s still less than the $7.50 fee initially proposed by Massport earlier this year. Further adjustments could be made by 2028, but more details on future rates will be discussed at an upcoming MBTA Board of Directors meeting, where the agreements are still up for approval.

The agreement also brings several key changes to make travel more convenient and efficient. Massport will work on expanding curbside access for rideshare passengers, although it’s still unclear whether centralized drop-off and pickup spots will stay. At the same time, Uber and Lyft are rolling out new features, including car-sharing options, shuttle services, and algorithm updates that will allow drivers to stay at the airport longer after completing drop-offs, helping to improve the flow of rides.

The fee will be much lower for those opting for shared rides, just $1.50.

A Growing Demand for Rideshare Services

“As Boston Logan continues to grow, we expect even more travelers to use Ride Apps. We need to improve the infrastructure to support them, as well as our other ground transportation services, so we are able to move more passengers with the least impact,” said Massport CEO Rich Davey. He emphasized that the agreement aims to make rides to and from Logan more affordable while easing congestion around the airport.

Commentary from Uber and Lyft

Representatives from both Uber and Lyft shared positive views on the deal, though they noted concerns about the fee increases.

“Lyft appreciates the productive conversations we’ve been able to have with Massport since their initial announcement,” said Brendan Joyce, Lyft’s Public Policy Manager. “While we still have concerns about increasing fees on riders, this is a step in the right direction. It allows us to improve the rider experience at Logan as we continue to look for ways to equitably fund the airport’s future success.”

Josh Gold, Uber’s Senior Director of Public Policy and Communications, echoed similar sentiments. “We are pleased to have negotiated this compromise with Massport that will get passengers to and from Logan Airport more efficiently while at the same time reducing congestion in the area,” said Gold. “We will continue to work with Massport to get travelers as close to the curb as possible and will always advocate for the best service for riders and the best platform for drivers.”

Looking Ahead

The partnership between Massport, Uber, and Lyft is set to reshape the rideshare experience at Logan Airport, improving services while tackling traffic and congestion. Although there’s a slight increase in cost, these changes aim to offer travelers a smoother, more efficient way to get to and from the airport.
