April is Alcohol Awareness Month, a time to spotlight the dangers of impaired driving and how it affects communities. With DUI-related crashes still a major issue in Colorado, Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) and Uber are working together to encourage safer choices.
A Shared Goal: Fewer DUIs, Safer Roads
For years, MADD has led the charge in the fight against drunk driving. The nonprofit provides support to victims, pushes for stronger DUI laws, and educates people on the risks of driving under the influence. Their mission? A future with zero DUI-related deaths.
Uber, known for its easy-to-use rideshare service, has expanded over the years to include food delivery and freight transport. But at its core, the company is still focused on helping people get where they need to go safely.
The Reality of DUIs in Colorado
Drunk driving is still a leading cause of traffic deaths across the country, and Colorado is no exception. The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) reports that one in three fatal crashes in the state involves a driver under the influence.
Nationwide, the numbers are just as alarming. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 37 people die in DUI-related crashes every single day.
Even if you haven’t been directly impacted, statistics show that two out of three people will experience the effects of impaired driving at some point in their lifetime.
Ridesharing Helps Reduce DUI Rates
Uber’s own data supports what many already believe—having a rideshare option helps cut down on DUIs. In fact, studies show that ridesharing has led to a 5.27% drop in DUI-related incidents across the country.
Now, MADD and Uber are pushing to make an even bigger impact. Throughout April, they’re running a campaign urging people to think twice before getting behind the wheel.
“Instead of getting behind the wheel impaired, count on one of Uber’s seven million designated drivers to get home,” says Uber’s latest campaign, which will run across Colorado all month long.
Taking Action Beyond Awareness
Raising awareness is just the start. Uber is also stepping up by matching donations to MADD, up to $25,000 during April, to further support DUI prevention programs.
By offering a safer alternative and encouraging people to make smarter choices, MADD and Uber are making significant progress in the fight against DUIs—not just in Colorado, but nationwide.
