Passengers at Nashville International Airport (BNA) have grown accustomed to quick rideshare pickups. However, some rideshare drivers warn these swift waits may soon be a thing of the past. Concerns have surfaced over the new rideshare waiting lot’s increased distance, potentially leading to longer delays for customers.
“They’re going to be waiting longer,” shared one Uber driver. “What used to be a 2-minute pickup could now take closer to 11 minutes.”
The former lot, located just about three minutes away from the terminal, frequently ran out of space due to its limited size. To resolve this, BNA relocated the lot to Murfreesboro Pike, adding 200 more spaces, improved security, and restroom facilities. However, drivers argue the larger lot’s distance is a critical downside.
Driver Foris Nur expressed concerns over peak travel hours, stating, “At 5 p.m., when you’ve got 6,000 arrivals over a short time span customers could end up waiting half an hour for a ride. It’s going to feel like a traffic collapse.”
Another issue raised by drivers is reduced earnings. Nur added, “Previously, we could make $30 an hour, but with the longer trips and delays, we’re down to about $15 per hour. It’s like cutting our earnings in half.”
A new system to address mounting concerns
BNA, however, has a solution rolling out in June to alleviate these concerns. The airport authority has announced the introduction of a “rematch” system for rideshare drivers, allowing them to pick up new passengers immediately at the terminal instead of heading to the waiting lot.
This change is expected to have several benefits, including reduced wait times for passengers, less congestion on Terminal Drive, and increased earning potential for drivers.
“As part of our extensive airport expansion, we’ve worked closely with Transportation Network Company (TNC) stakeholders to ensure a smooth transition,” stated the Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority. The multi-million-dollar initiative involves upgrading ground transportation areas, constructing new facilities, and implementing features like the instant rematch system.
This upgrade aligns with BNA’s plan to enhance passenger and driver experiences amidst Nashville’s growing demand for efficient airport transportation. The instant rematch system promises to reduce delays while helping drivers maximize their time behind the wheel.
Starting next month, Nashville travelers can enjoy faster rideshare pickups while drivers gain operational advantages. Until then, both passengers and drivers are preparing for the changes ahead.
