Lyft is launching a new service that puts older adults at the center of its rideshare experience. Starting May 5, Lyft Silver will be available across the U.S., offering seniors a more straightforward, more intuitive way to get around—whether they’ve stopped driving due to vision issues, hearing loss, or slower reaction times.
A Senior-Friendly Rideshare Option Designed with Accessibility in Mind
As the U.S. population ages, mobility options haven’t kept pace with seniors’ needs. Recognizing this, Lyft Silver introduces a streamlined experience tailored to older riders. From easier navigation to a layout built for comfort and clarity, the service helps seniors maintain independence, stay connected with others, and access daily essentials without relying on others.
Meeting a Growing Need Among America’s Aging Population
There’s a clear gap in rideshare access among older adults. Although nearly 20% of Americans are now 65 or older, only 5.6% of Lyft riders fall into that age group. This new offering aims to close that gap by giving older Americans the tools to travel more confidently and safely.
Local Partnerships That Deliver Real-World Impact
Lyft is teaming up with local health organizations to expand its reach and ensure real impact. One such partner is Los Angeles-based AltaMed, which serves many older adults navigating chronic health issues.
“For many of AltaMed’s senior patients, a lack of transportation poses a significant barrier to accessing health care,” the organization stated. “Lyft’s commitment to providing convenient and accessible rideshare options is a game-changer for AltaMed patients in Los Angeles County, ensuring they receive timely and appropriate medical care.”
Through this partnership, AltaMed will help riders aged 62 and older get to and from medical appointments reliably using Lyft Silver. It’s a move that tackles one of seniors’ most significant challenges: transportation to critical care.
The Link Between Mobility and Mental Health in Older Adults
Beyond healthcare access, Lyft highlights how reliable transportation can ease feelings of loneliness and isolation among older adults. Using data from the 2024 U.S. Census, Lyft found that seniors with consistent transportation options are three times less likely to report loneliness than those without them.
“Transportation is key to human connection,” Lyft noted, pointing to the strong relationship between mobility and emotional well-being.
Supporting Independence and Connection Through Lyft Silver
With the launch of Lyft Silver, the company is expanding the definition of accessible transportation. This new option is more than a way to get from point A to point B—it’s a step toward independence, wellness, and connection for older adults nationwide.
