Motorcoach Travel Leads the Way in Sustainability

As summer travel approaches, a new study by the American Bus Association Foundation (ABA Foundation) reveals that motorcoach travel is the most sustainable and energy-efficient mode of passenger transportation in North America.

Commissioned in collaboration with Oxford Economics, the Motorcoach 2025 Sustainability and Innovation Report highlights that motorcoaches produce the lowest carbon dioxide emissions per passenger-mile compared to air travel, rail, ferries, transit buses, and personal vehicles.

“This report recognizes what our industry has long known: motorcoaches are the most energy-efficient, lowest-emission mode of passenger transportation available today,” says Fred Ferguson, President and CEO of the American Bus Association. He adds that in 2023 alone, motorcoach travel saved the U.S. an estimated $2.7 billion in social costs linked to emissions.

Innovations in Sustainable Travel

The report credits key sustainability achievements in the motorcoach industry to advanced practices such as clean idle engine technology, sustainable manufacturing, and the use of eco-friendly materials. Ferguson emphasizes, “Clean, connected travel is not only possible—it’s already here.”

Key Findings

  • Top energy efficiency: Motorcoaches are the most energy-efficient form of passenger transportation per mile.
  • Lowest emissions: They generate fewer carbon emissions per passenger-mile than any other mode of travel.
  • Environmental savings: Nearly 38 billion passenger-miles traveled by motorcoach in 2023 avoided an estimated $2.7 billion in environmental and health-related costs.
  • Advanced technology: New motorcoaches have cut idle nitrogen oxide emissions to nearly half of regulatory limits.
  • Best environmental performance: Motorcoaches outperform all other methods of passenger transport across significant pollutant metrics.

Industry Sustainability Efforts

The report also highlights how motorcoach manufacturers and operators are driving forward sustainability initiatives:

Among Manufacturers:

  • 62% include recycling in their strategic plans.
  • 54% set carbon emission reduction targets and track environmental performance.
  • 31% integrate renewable energy within their operations.

Among Operators:

  • 71% focus on fleet renewal and maintenance to lower emissions.
  • 65% have formal sustainability plans in place.
  • 60% enforce anti-idling policies.
  • 54% offer eco-conscious driver training programs.

Ferguson notes, “Motorcoach operators are proving they are key players in the climate solution. By encouraging group travel, they not only reduce emissions but also ease congestion in high-traffic areas.”

A Commitment to Sustainable Travel

The study, based on surveys among North American motorcoach manufacturers and operators, captures the industry’s commitment to innovation and environmental responsibility.

Since its founding in 1995, the ABA Foundation has been a leader in promoting education and research for sustainable travel and has awarded over $1 million in scholarships. The foundation continues to support studies that highlight the benefits of green travel solutions.
