Chicago Drivers What You Should Know About the New Rideshare Pay Proposal

If you’re behind the wheel for Uber, Lyft, or another rideshare company in Chicago, there’s an important proposal in the works that could affect your pay and job protections.

Right now, the city is considering a new ordinance that would require rideshare companies to pay drivers more. It’s called the Rideshare Living Wage and Safety Ordinance, and it’s also designed to give drivers more security by making sure companies provide advance notice before suspending drivers and reminding them about their right to appeal.

Many drivers have shared concerns about unpredictable pay and getting suspended without warning. This legislation aims to change that. It could mean steadier earnings and fairer treatment if it passes.

On the other side, companies like Uber and Lyft warn this change could push ride costs up sharply—Uber estimates fares could rise by nearly 40%, and Lyft says over 50%. They’re worried this might reduce the number of rides people request, which could also affect drivers’ overall income.

There’s also a tax angle. Rideshare companies currently contribute more than $200 million annually to Chicago’s tax revenue, so fewer rides could impact city budgets and services.

The proposal is still moving through the city’s Workforce Development Committee and could come up for a City Council vote soon. If you drive in Chicago, it’s worth keeping an eye on how this develops—it could change the way you work and get paid.
