Uber launches new features to simplify ride-hailing for seniors

Ridesharing giants Uber and Lyft are ramping up efforts to serve a growing demographic of riders: seniors. Both companies have begun debuting innovations tailored to older adults, including enhanced safety features, live phone support, and simplified app interfaces to improve usability.

This week, Uber took a significant step forward by expanding its “Senior Accounts” nationwide. The service, integrated into Uber’s Family Profile feature, underwent initial testing in Phoenix, Arizona, and Orlando, Florida, before its broader release.

Key Features of Uber’s Senior Accounts

The “Senior Accounts” feature provides a streamlined version of the Uber app, prioritizing simplicity and ease of use. The interface includes:

  • Larger text for readability.
  • Fewer buttons to reduce confusion.
  • Intuitive navigation for a smoother experience.

According to Briana Gilmore, Uber’s global head of accessibility policy, the service aims to address barriers to independence that older adults often face when accessing healthcare, food, medications, or keeping in touch with loved ones.

“Transportation is truly one of the biggest barriers to independence as we age,” Gilmore explained to FOX Business. “We want to help fill that gap for older adults, realizing they’re more likely to be isolated, which can affect entire families and communities.”

The “Senior Accounts” feature also includes saved places, allowing seniors to quickly select frequent destinations, such as their home or doctor’s office, without repeatedly typing in addresses. Additionally, family members can use the shared Family Profile to manage rides, contact drivers, and receive real-time updates.

Uber Introduces Simple Mode for First-Time Users

For older adults who prefer full control of their account, Uber has also rolled out “Simple Mode.” Found in the app’s Account section, this feature offers the same safety benefits and customizations as the standard app but with a cleaner interface.

Gilmore emphasized, “It’s a simplified version of the app, with all the great options and safety features intact, but fewer buttons, bigger text, and a more streamlined design.”

Lyft’s Competitive Push

Lyft, Uber’s main competitor, isn’t far behind in catering to seniors. Since May, Lyft has been testing “Lyft Silver,” a streamlined version of its app that focuses on essential features for older riders. Key highlights include:

  • Live phone support.
• Enhanced ride-sharing options with trusted contacts.
  • Priority matching to vehicles that are easier to get in and out of.

At present, only 25,000 riders have access to “Lyft Silver,” but the company continues to refine its offerings and plans to expand further.

Competition Heats Up in the Ride-Hailing Industry

Both Uber and Lyft are racing to stand out in the ride-hailing market, unveiling similar features to enhance the rider experience. Innovations include:

  • Shuttle services.
  • Improved airport pickups.
  • Ride scheduling.
  • “Price lock” tools to avoid surge pricing (for an added fee).
  • Autonomous vehicle integration.

Lyft CEO David Risher recently shared at the Harvard Business Review Leadership Summit that Lyft is gaining market share by offering unique options like Women+ Connect, a program that matches women and nonbinary drivers with similar riders for added comfort and safety.

Moving Forward

With seniors becoming an increasingly critical demographic in the ridesharing space, the latest offerings from Uber and Lyft signal a new era of accessibility and inclusivity. These companies aim to empower older adults with tools that increase convenience, safety, and independence, proving that ride-hailing services aren’t just about getting from A to B—but about fostering connections and communities.
