At the 51st School Bus Driver International Safety Competition, organized by the National School Transportation Association, Betty Nelson of Dean Transportation secured a remarkable win in the Conventional Bus (Type C) division. The contest, held in Uhland, Texas at the end of June, assembled top drivers representing the best from state and provincial competitions throughout the United States and Canada. Nelson’s victory broke a 24-year streak for Michigan, making her the first driver from the state in more than two decades to top the category.
“Everybody at the table, their heads snapped, looking at me, and jaws dropped,” Nelson shared with WZZM. “My husband stood up and started hooting, and I started bawling.”
Competition Format and Highlights
The National School Transportation Association event challenges participants with both a rigorous 50-question written assessment covering driving regulations and procedures, and an intricate driving skills course. The latter, hosted at the Hays Consolidated Independent School District’s transportation center, saw drivers putting their expertise to the test behind the wheel. Navigating complex obstacles and responding to scenarios designed for real-world safety kept the competition intense and authentic.
Each competitor had already proven their abilities at the state or province level just to qualify, making this the final proving ground for the best in North American school bus safety.
Honoring Excellence in School Transportation
Recognition came for all drivers at a formal gathering at the Austin Marriott Downtown. NSTA President Dan Kobussen addressed the group, honoring their achievements and ongoing commitment to student safety:
“This respected event gives school bus drivers from across North America the chance to demonstrate their skills and knowledge while competing to be the best in their field,” Kobussen said.
Drivers, including Nelson, received plaques and certificates in acknowledgement of their outstanding performance and dedication.
Highlights from the Competition
In addition to Nelson’s win, other standout performances were celebrated. The Bill Loshbough Grand Champion Award, presented to the overall top scorer, went to Brian Brickmann from Oregon’s Beaverton School District. Moments like these highlight the professionalism and focus on safety that the National School Transportation Association seeks to elevate within the industry.
Dean Transportation at the Forefront
Dean Transportation, a company deeply committed to safety and service in Michigan, takes great pride in Nelson’s achievement. This recognition reflects the organization’s broader emphasis on professional driver training and the importance of excellence on and off the road. Nelson’s journey through the national contest demonstrates what’s possible when skill meets opportunity.
