GNEMA Announces First-Ever Driver Safety Contest in Atlantic City

The Greater Northeast Motorcoach Association (GNEMA) is ramping up its dedication to safety by hosting its first Driver Safety Competition on Wednesday, September 24, 2025. This landmark event will unfold at Atlantic City’s Surf Stadium, serving as one of the key highlights of GNEMA’s 2025 Fall Annual Meeting & Marketplace, running from September 23 to 25.

This initiative goes beyond recognizing driving capability; it’s a testament to GNEMA’s ongoing efforts to prioritize safety within the motorcoach industry.

Shaping the Vision for Safety

The inaugural competition has come to life through the collaboration of GNEMA’s Board of Directors, its Safety & Risk Control Committee, and Executive Director Pattie Cowley. Their combined efforts have shaped an event that honors exceptional drivers while underlining the importance of safety on the roads.

“The GNEMA Driver Safety Competition is a celebration of the skill, dedication, and professionalism that define our industry’s finest drivers,” said Michelle Petelicki, GNEMA’s Vice President and the President of Panorama Tours. “It reinforces the critical role they play in keeping our roads and passengers safe every day.”

What to Expect at the Competition

The Driver Safety Competition will showcase the talents of some of the region’s most experienced motorcoach drivers. With fifteen participants proving their skills, spectators and industry peers can expect a day dedicated to excellence and safety.

Competition Features

  • 8 Skill-Based Events: Each participant will complete a series of challenges designed to test their expertise in real-world driving scenarios.
  • On-Board Evaluation: Every driver will face an in-depth evaluation of their performance under varying conditions.
  • Written Test: Participants must also demonstrate their knowledge of traffic laws and best practices for passenger safety.
  • Opportunity to Advance: Top performers will secure eligibility to compete in the next Annual UMA International Driver’s Competition.

Participation Requirements

To create fair competition and maintain high standards, GNEMA has outlined specific criteria for participation. Potential contestants must meet the following eligibility requirements before they can compete:

  • A valid commercial driver’s license (CDL) with a passenger endorsement at the time of application and the event
  • A current medical certificate
  • No driver’s license suspension for at least 24 months preceding the competition
  • Current employment with a GNEMA operator member
  • Active bus or motorcoach driving as a primary occupation
  • No out-of-service violations within the past 24 months
  • A minimum of two years of accident-free (preventable) driving experience

This stringent eligibility checklist ensures that only the best drivers contend for the title while maintaining the spirit of professionalism and safety.

Why This Event Matters

GNEMA’s initiative isn’t just about celebrating the talent of top drivers—it also shines a spotlight on the critical role safety plays in the passenger transport industry. The competition is designed to create awareness, set benchmarks for excellence, and foster camaraderie among industry professionals.

For GNEMA members, there are multiple ways to get involved. Operators can encourage qualified drivers to register, while others can lend support as volunteers or sponsors. By engaging in these ways, participants play a vital role in strengthening the industry’s focus on safety.
