As part of its continued evolution, Lyft is rolling out a new feature set that lets riders personalize their experience, with big implications for how drivers connect with returning passengers—and potentially boost earnings.
Riders Can Now “Favorite” Drivers They Connect With
One of the most notable additions is the ability for passengers to mark a driver as a “favorite” after a ride. This gives riders more control over future trips by making it easier to reconnect with drivers they already know and trust.
“This isn’t just about convenience – it’s about giving you more control over your ride experience,” Lyft explained in an official announcement.
For drivers, being marked as a favorite means they’ll get priority access to that passenger’s future scheduled rides whenever possible. That’s an opportunity to build familiarity and consistency—something both riders and drivers often prefer.
“You can build relationships with drivers who get your vibe, whether that’s keeping the car cool for your commute or knowing when you need quiet time before a big meeting.”
When a rider adds a driver to their favorites list, the driver gets notified through the app. From there, that driver will see future ride requests from the rider before others—especially for scheduled pickups.
Blocking Feature Gives Riders More Peace of Mind
Lyft is also introducing a first-of-its-kind feature: riders can now block drivers directly through the app. Whether it’s a clash in personality or an uncomfortable experience, riders will be able to avoid being matched again with that driver in the future.
This new level of rider choice aligns with Lyft’s emphasis on trust and safety—without negatively impacting drivers who are consistently professional.
“When drivers know they’re appreciated, it creates a positive cycle. They’re motivated to continue providing exceptional service, and you get consistently great rides with people you trust.”
A Centralized Safety Hub Rolls Out
To bring these updates together, Lyft is also launching a new in-app Safety Hub, where riders can configure security options like PIN verification, ride check-ins, audio recordings, and now, the ability to view and manage both favorited and blocked drivers.
This comes as part of Lyft’s larger effort to create a more transparent and rider-controlled experience, while still supporting the drivers behind the wheel.
What This Means for Lyft Drivers
For those behind the wheel, the new features offer a way to build repeat business, get higher ratings, and increase visibility to riders who prefer your driving style or vibe. In an industry where one good ride can lead to multiple future connections, this type of system rewards consistency and professionalism.
These updates are expected to roll out across the U.S. and Canada by the end of August.
And Lyft isn’t alone. Just a day prior, Uber launched its “Women Rider Preference” feature in select cities, allowing women drivers and riders to be paired exclusively with other women—another move aimed at increasing comfort and control in rideshare spaces.
