Michigan’s Indian Trails Named Top Bus Service in the U.S. by USA Today

For the second year running, Indian Trails has been recognized as the number one bus service in the United States, earning this prestigious spot in USA Today’s 2025 “10 Best Readers’ Choice Awards.” The Michigan-based company outperformed major national carriers like Megabus, Greyhound, and FlixBus to claim the top honor.

Chad Cushman, president and CEO of Indian Trails, shared his thoughts on the win:
“We were voted No. 1 above some pretty big national companies. The fact that we’re a relatively small, regional, family-owned company competing with brands that generate hundreds of millions of dollars a year makes this even more rewarding. It’s a testament to our employees, our riders, and the agencies that partner with us.”

Indian Trails stands out as the only Michigan operator on the list and one of just a few regional bus companies to receive national acclaim. This achievement reflects more than a century of commitment; the company has been serving passengers for over 115 years.

With the largest network of scheduled bus routes in Michigan, Indian Trails connects over 80 communities across the state and stretches into Wisconsin and Minnesota. Unlike larger carriers that operate in Michigan, Indian Trails offers the most comprehensive intrastate bus service.

The company also runs the Michigan Flyer airport shuttle, which provides multiple daily trips between East Lansing, Brighton, Ann Arbor, and Detroit Metro Airport. Since 2006, this shuttle service has transported nearly 3 million passengers, maintaining an impressive 98% on-time record.

Beyond its statewide service, Indian Trails supports college communities by operating contract shuttles near Michigan State University and Western Michigan University.

Partnerships have played a crucial role in Indian Trails’ success. The company has worked with the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) for about 50 years and has expanded similar collaborations with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation since 2012, serving routes to Duluth and Milwaukee.

Chad Cushman noted, “These are long-term relationships built on consistent, high-quality service. As a 115-year-old company, we’ve developed a sophisticated operating system to deal with the challenges of bus travel, especially in Michigan winters. We know how to handle tough conditions and still provide safe, dependable service.”

At the heart of Indian Trails’ reputation is a focus on passengers. Cushman emphasizes, “It’s about providing excellent customer service. Without our passengers, we have no service. They are the ones who voted us to the top of this list, and we’re incredibly grateful.”
