A busy nightlife stretch in downtown St. Petersburg just got a safety-focused makeover for weekend crowds and rideshare traffic.
Starting July 4, the St. Petersburg Police Department launched a new pilot program redirecting Uber and Lyft drop-offs and pickups away from the congested 200 block of Central Avenue. Instead, riders and drivers are being rerouted to a nearby stretch—the 200 block of First Avenue North—just one street over.
The change affects Friday and Saturday nights between 8:00 p.m. and 4:00 a.m., when foot traffic and curb activity spike in the heart of the city’s bar and restaurant scene.
According to Lt. Thomas Qualey, the goal is simple: keep people safe and reduce the risk of accidents in an already jam-packed corridor.
“The last thing we want is someone to get hit by a car,” said Qualey. “That’s the public safety aspect. So moving this alleviates that problem where people aren’t getting backed up in the roadway and having near hits.”
Prior efforts included both outreach and enforcement—officers tried working directly with drivers and even issued citations—but those steps didn’t have the desired impact. That led to this new approach, inspired by solutions already proven effective in other cities.
“What we’re seeing is this is the best practice from other cities, and that’s why we’re utilizing it,” Qualey said. “It seems to work.”
For now, the change is temporary and under evaluation. If it improves safety and traffic flow as hoped, it could become a permanent adjustment.
The move marks the city’s latest effort to balance the needs of rideshare users, drivers, and local businesses while making nightlife safer for everyone who flocks to Central Avenue on weekends.
Rideshare drivers: the rideshare zone has moved for Friday and Saturday nights. If you’re heading downtown, be sure to plan your pickups and drop-offs accordingly.
