For the first time, driverless taxis are rolling out in New York City, and the reaction from professional drivers has been swift and loud.
A new pilot program gives Google-owned Waymo the green light to operate eight autonomous taxis in parts of Manhattan and Brooklyn. While the cars will technically be “driverless,” each vehicle must still include a human operator behind the wheel during this trial phase.
Rideshare and Taxi Drivers Sound the Alarm
In Midtown Manhattan, taxi and livery drivers gathered in protest, arguing that self-driving vehicles not only pose safety risks but also threaten the jobs of thousands of New Yorkers who depend on ridesharing and for-hire vehicle work.
According to industry estimates, more than 200,000 drivers in NYC, including Uber, Lyft, livery, black car, and yellow taxi drivers, could feel the impact if autonomous taxis expand beyond this small pilot program.
The concern among many rideshare drivers is simple: automation could mean fewer trips, lower earnings, and a long-term shift away from human-driven service.
Waymo Defends Its Expansion
Waymo, which already runs self-driving ride services in cities like Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Atlanta, released a statement to PIX11 addressing the backlash:
“We serve hundreds of thousands of trips every week in five major cities across the U.S., and strive to be good neighbors in the cities where we operate. We remain committed to listening to and working with the New York community to complement their transportation ecosystem, adding more access and safety to roads.”
What Happens Next
As part of the pilot, Waymo must report data, meet with NYC’s Department of Transportation, and follow strict oversight guidelines. When the program ends, the company can request an extension, potentially opening the door for wider use of driverless taxis in the city.
For now, rideshare and taxi drivers remain wary, seeing this experiment not as innovation but as a direct threat to their livelihoods.
