Amex Survey Shows Business Travel Set to Remain Strong in the Coming Year

Business travel continues to hold its ground. According to the latest American Express Trendex: Business Travel edition, more than 90 percent of business leaders anticipate that corporate travel will either stay steady or increase over the next 12 months.

The survey highlights some unexpected hotspots for business travel this year. Domestically, cities like Richmond, Virginia; Columbus, Ohio; Charleston, South Carolina; Boise, Idaho; and New Orleans, Louisiana are seeing notable interest. Internationally, Kumamoto, Japan; Cork, Ireland; and Malmö, Sweden are trending destinations for business trips.

“Business travel remains a proven growth driver. More than ever, companies must effectively manage costs and compliance while also meeting employee expectations for a smooth travel experience,” said Fernando Iraola, EVP & General Manager, Global & U.S. Large Enterprises, in the report. “With travel as a continued priority, we are seeing ongoing travel and business expansion in cities in the US and around the world, bringing business travel to these destinations and helping their communities flourish.”

Key Takeaways from the Report

  • The value of face-to-face interactions: The survey confirms that in-person meetings continue to matter. About 92 percent of decision-makers and 88 percent of travelers recognize the importance of being physically present. Maintaining client relationships (64 percent) and generating new business (59 percent) remain top reasons for hitting the road.
  • Travel as a perk and productivity challenge: Companies are using travel to attract and retain talent, with 80 percent reporting it as an incentive. For travelers, 84 percent view trips as a perk, with Gen-Z and Millennials leading the perception at 88 percent, followed by Gen-X and Boomers at 78 percent.
  • Tracking ROI and spending control: Nearly all companies (93 percent) connect in-person meetings to business growth, while 87 percent of travelers say client relationships benefit more from face-to-face meetings than virtual ones. At the same time, 90 percent of companies stress the need for stronger oversight of travel spending, and 60 percent expect their focus on budget optimization to increase over the next year.

The findings underline the ongoing importance of business travel, showing that while virtual meetings are convenient, in-person interactions still drive key outcomes. The full press release from American Express provides a deeper dive into the survey results.
