With SEPTA’s latest round of service cuts causing challenges for many residents, Uber is stepping in to help Philly seniors get where they need to go. The rideshare giant has partnered with local nonprofits ACHIEVEability and the Ogontz Avenue Revitalization Corporation OARC to provide free rides to seniors, ensuring access to essential appointments and services.
The initiative, called Uber’s Senior Ride Program, aims to give older residents a safe and reliable transportation option. According to a press release, 20 percent of Philadelphia’s population, roughly 316,000 people, are over the age of 60.
“This innovative partnership is a prime example of how the private sector and community organizations can connect to fill critical gaps to support our neighbors,” said State Rep. Morgan Cephas, D Philadelphia. “By providing a reliable transportation alternative, we’re helping ensure older Philadelphians can maintain their independence and dignity, while preserving their quality of life.”
Emilie Boman, head of Social Impact at Uber, emphasized the importance of accessibility during transit disruptions. “Our goal is to make it easier for all Philadelphians to get around, and this program ensures that seniors in West and Northwest Philly have a safe, reliable option when they need it most.”
Seniors with smartphones can receive vouchers and promotional codes to book rides through the Uber app. Those without smartphones in West Philadelphia should contact ACHIEVEability, while seniors in Northwest Philadelphia can schedule rides via OARC.
The program comes amid a temporary injunction halting further SEPTA cuts, including those affecting Regional Rail services, following a day-long hearing by a judge who reviewed arguments from SEPTA riders seeking to reverse the reductions. While SEPTA’s 300-million-dollar stabilization fund could potentially address service losses, the injunction ensures seniors and other residents maintain access to critical transportation for the time being.
For rideshare drivers, programs like this highlight how private transportation services can play a vital role in community support, especially when traditional transit faces limitations.
