Alan Thrasher Steps Up to Support Birmingham Shelter Through Dancing With the Stars of the Magic City

United Motorcoach Association Chairman Alan Thrasher is taking his passion for service to the dance floor in Birmingham’s “Dancing With the Stars of the Magic City.” The fundraiser supports First Light Women and Children’s Shelter, with Thrasher representing the motorcoach industry ahead of the 2026 UMA EXPO.

Motorcoach industry leaders are used to long days behind the wheel or in the boardroom—but for United Motorcoach Association Chairman Alan Thrasher, the next big challenge involves bright lights, choreography, and sequins.

Thrasher will represent the industry in Birmingham’s Dancing With the Stars of the Magic City, a community fundraiser that benefits First Light Women and Children’s Shelter. The event takes place Nov. 6 at the historic Lyric Theatre and will raise crucial funds to provide housing and support services for families in need.

As UMA prepares to host the 2026 Motorcoach EXPO in Birmingham this February, Thrasher hopes to channel the attention surrounding the show into meaningful local impact.

“Please help us win by raising funds that support the general yearly budget of a critical service for homeless women in Birmingham,” Thrasher said.

Thrasher, co-owner of Thrasher Brothers Trailways, is dancing alongside Toni Dennis, director of City Walk BHAM and co-founder of Magic City Disco. Together, they’re competing for the Torch People’s Choice Award, which goes to the team that earns the most donations for First Light. Each dollar donated equals one vote, allowing supporters across the country to show their backing for both the shelter and the industry.

A Cause That Hits Close to Home

Founded in 1998, First Light serves as a vital safety net for women and children experiencing homelessness. The Birmingham-based organization offers 38 emergency beds and nine permanent housing units, with ongoing renovations to add 24 more. Beyond shelter, it provides stability, job readiness, and long-term support to help families rebuild their lives.

Thrasher has selected First Light as UMA’s official charity partner ahead of the 2026 EXPO, inviting operators, drivers, and suppliers to contribute throughout the fall and during the event.

“The goal for UMA is to raise funds through October for the contest, then continue to raise funds during EXPO at Topgolf to present First Light with a big check,” Thrasher said. “This way, we will know how much UMA members have contributed to help women and children who suddenly find themselves homeless.”

Supporting Through the Spirit of the Industry

For those in passenger transport, giving back is second nature. From hurricane relief shuttles to veterans’ parades, motorcoach operators often play a quiet but essential role in helping communities move forward. Supporting First Light is an extension of that same spirit—using the power of connection to lift others up.

Donations to Thrasher’s Dancing With the Stars campaign can be made online at firstlightstars.swell.gives/fundraisers/alanthrasherand.tonidennis.

“Please help us help them,” Thrasher said. “Each dollar is a vote — and every vote makes a difference.”

The live event will stream at 6:30 p.m. CST, and updates can be followed on social media at @dwtsmagiccity, @firstlightshelter, and @unitedmotorcoach.
