School District Invites Prospective Bus Drivers to Test Drive Before Applying

Derby Public Schools is hosting hands-on recruitment events where prospective bus drivers can operate a school bus, meet trainers, and learn about driving opportunities for the 2026-27 school year.

A Kansas school district is allowing prospective bus drivers to get behind the wheel before deciding whether to apply for a position.

Derby Public Schools announced a series of “try it out” events as part of its recruitment efforts for the 2026-27 school year. The sessions are intended to help job seekers determine if school bus driving is the right fit through a hands-on experience rather than a traditional interview or information session.

The events will take place at Panther Stadium in Derby on June 23 and June 25. Attendees can participate during either the morning session from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. or the evening session from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

District trainers will be available throughout the events to answer questions about the position. Participants will also have the chance to operate a school bus while trainers ride along.

Derby Public Schools said applicants do not need a commercial driver’s license to attend the events or apply for an open driver position. The district will assist hired candidates with obtaining the CDL required for the role.

The recruitment events are aimed at individuals who want a closer look at the job before beginning the application process and training program.
