The Pacific Bus Museum will celebrate its 37th anniversary with its annual Summer Open House on Aug. 16, allowing bus enthusiasts, transportation professionals and members of the public to explore historic coaches, meet fellow enthusiasts and support the preservation of bus history.

The free event will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the museum’s headquarters in Fremont, California. It will feature restored vintage buses, memorabilia vendors, a barbecue lunch, raffles and the public debut of a previously undisclosed historic coach joining the museum’s collection.

Historic Coach to Make Final Public Appearance

This year’s open house will also mark the final public appearance of a 1931 Greyhound coach that has been on loan to the museum since last year’s event.

Museum officials said the newly acquired coach being unveiled during the event is not another Greyhound bus, reflecting the organization’s ongoing effort to preserve a broader cross-section of North American bus history.

“I love how we continue to evolve. We are always looking to update our fleet to tell new bus history stories. We have expanded our research archive and continue to see new faces show up to our twice-monthly visitor days,” said Tom Baker, the museum’s director-at-large.

Preserving More Than Three Decades of Bus History

Founded in 1989 and incorporated as a nonprofit organization in 1991, the Pacific Bus Museum is dedicated to preserving, restoring and operating historic buses while educating the public about the industry’s history through exhibits, restoration projects and community events.

Over the years, the museum has hosted bus enthusiast gatherings, historical programs, birthday celebrations and vehicle shows, helping introduce more people to the history of passenger transportation.

Its collection includes several restored buses representing different eras of the industry, including the well-known GM PD-4501 Scenicruiser, one of the most recognizable intercity coaches ever produced.

Growing Interest from a New Generation

The museum has also expanded its online presence over the past year.

According to museum officials, its Facebook following has grown from approximately 4,500 followers to more than 11,000, a milestone they hope will help attract younger visitors and introduce more people to the history of the motorcoach industry.

In addition to the museum’s collection, privately owned vintage buses and coaches from other organizations are expected to be displayed during the open house. Owners interested in exhibiting a vehicle are encouraged to arrive beginning at 9 a.m.

Event Details

The annual open house will include a transportation memorabilia flea market, barbecue lunch and raffles, with proceeds supporting the museum’s preservation and educational programs.

Admission to the event is free. Barbecue lunches will be available for a suggested donation of $17 for adults and $10 for children ages 10 and younger.
