Uber is expanding its teen safety tools with a new optional feature that allows parents and guardians to watch a live video feed during eligible teen trips.
The feature uses the driver’s front-facing phone camera and is available only if the driver chooses to enable livestreaming for teen rides. When a parent or guardian begins watching the livestream, both the driver and the teen rider will receive a notification through the Uber app.
Nationwide Rollout Begins After Initial Testing
Uber said the feature will begin rolling out across the United States over the coming weeks after being tested in nine markets: Atlanta; Phoenix; Orlando; San Antonio; Cleveland; El Paso, Texas; Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina; Portland, Oregon; and Rhode Island.
The announcement comes as students return to school, when many families rely on rideshare services for transportation to and from school, sports, and other activities.
Drivers Can Choose Whether to Participate
Livestreaming is optional for drivers and must be enabled before it can be used during eligible teen trips.
According to Uber, the video feed is captured using the driver’s selfie camera, and the company recommends positioning the phone to provide a clear view of the vehicle’s back seat. The livestream operates in the background, while the app monitors battery life, device temperature and overall performance. If a device begins to overheat, loses connection or experiences performance issues, Uber said the livestream will automatically pause.
Who Can View the Livestream?
Only adults connected to the teen’s Uber account can access the livestream while the trip is in progress.
Uber said the video is intended only for live viewing and will not be available after the ride ends. Similar to the platform’s audio recording feature, the company said neither the driver, the teen rider nor the parent or guardian will be able to access a recording after the trip is complete.
Teen Ride Safety Features Continue to Expand
The livestream option joins several safety features already available for Uber Teen rides.
Parents and guardians can already follow trips in real time through the app, while PIN verification is required before every teen trip begins. Drivers and riders also have the option to record audio during eligible trips.
Uber launched its Teen account program in 2023 for riders ages 13 to 17. The company says the service is now available in more than 50 countries and has been used for tens of millions of trips.
